Africa's largest industrial project has just taken a historic step toward public ownership. The Dangote Petroleum Refinery IPO officially opened on September 14, 2026, and for the first time, Nigerians and international investors can buy shares and become shareholders in the 700,000 barrels-per-day refinery.
At BRB Financial Advisory, we believe this is one of the most significant capital markets events in Nigeria's history, and we want our clients and community to understand exactly what it means, how it works, and how to participate.
What is the Dangote Refinery IPO?
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has launched an Initial Public Offering (IPO) to sell up to a 10 percent stake in the company. The offer comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at NGN 525 per share, targeting approximately NGN 2.15 trillion if fully subscribed, with subscriptions running from September 14 through October 13, 2026.
This is the refinery's first public offer since its commissioning, and it is widely regarded as the biggest IPO in Africa's history, with a targeted valuation in the region of $40 to $50 billion. Shares are expected to begin trading on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) in the coming months following the close of the offer.
Why this Matters
Since it began operations, the Dangote Refinery has transformed Nigeria's fuel supply chain, reducing the country's reliance on imported petroleum products and positioning Nigeria as a net exporter of refined fuel. The refinery currently accounts for a significant share of Nigeria's total domestic refining output, and swung from a loss in full-year 2025 to a strong profit in the first half of 2026 on the back of expanding refining margins.
Opening the company to public ownership allows everyday Nigerians, not just institutional investors, to own a stake in this transformation. As the company has stated, this is designed to be an inclusive offering, with no restrictions on who can participate.
